Legal frameworks for women’s economic autonomy and empowerment in Ibero-America/

Laws are the guarantor instrument for eliminating direct discrimination that undermines the full enjoyment of women's rights. Therefore, promoting the repeal of laws that discriminate against women in Ibero-America is a first and necessary step towards achieving real and substantive gender equality.

To this end, SEGIB is working together with UN Women on an initiative that aims to: show the extent of legislative inequality that affects women's economic empowerment; encourage action to repeal discriminatory laws and foster gender-sensitive laws and policies; and promote multi-sectoral alliances to achieve effective and impactful legislative reforms.

Within the framework of this initiative and with the support of the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID), country profiles have been developed to identify, in detail, progress and challenges in this regard in each of the 22 Ibero-American countries, through two documents: a country profile and a proposed reform agenda.
