12th Civic Meeting

24th - 26th October. San José, Costa Rica

The Civic Meeting will be held with the aim of providing insights and experiences to the next Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government on the policies and processes with an impact on the eradication of poverty and the development of civil, economic, social and cultural rights of Ibero-American citizens. The Civic Meeting will be aligned with the theme of the next Ibero-American Summit (“A thriving, inclusive and sustainable Ibero-America”), to be held in Antigua, Guatemala, on 15th and 16th November, 2018.

The 12th Civic Meeting is an opportunity to reinforce the structuring of civil society organisations (CSOs) in the region, and to strengthen their role as actors contributing to development, democracy and the defence of human rights.

The forum will provide an arena for reflective thinking and undertaking internal work:

o Approached from the perspective of experts in the field of civil society in the region.
o Involving representatives from CSOs and the Coordinating Commission for Ibero-American Civic Meetings.
o Redefining the Ibero-American Civic Meeting, from the perspective of the internal work undertaken by the attendant CSOs.
o Developing the Work Plan 2018-2020 of the Coordinating Commission for Ibero-American Civic Meetings.

The different sessions will focus on:

– Addressing and discussing the theme of the Summit: “A thriving, inclusive and sustainable Ibero-America” within the framework of the 2030 SDGs.
– Engaging in an institutional dialogue between the attendant CSOs and the Ibero-American Secretary-General. Reading of the declaration of the 12th Ibero-American Civic Meeting.

Rebeca Grynspan, the Ibero-American Secretary-General, will participate both in the inauguration of the forum as well as engaging in dialogue with civic society on the institutionalization of the Ibero-American Civic Meetings.
